The lecture presents the fundamental challenges and solutions related to gas sensing with mobile robots to provide the robots with a sense of smell. It focuses on particular applications like environmental air pollution monitoring, gas source localization, and gas distribution mapping, where robots equipped with different types of gas sensors can be deployed. The lecture will further illustrate these by presenting examples from field studies and current research activities. Accompanying exercises provide a practical understanding of the concepts explained in the lecture and train the students to apply learned knowledge and skills in small practical experiments and programming tasks with real hardware, e.g. sensors.
The first few weeks of the semester will only consist of theoretical lecture units. After the first weeks, the lectures are accompanied by exercise units every two weeks for a whole afternoon.
