On Integer-Forcing Precoding for the Gaussian MIMO Broadcast Channel

Danilo Silva

Abstract:

Broadcast communication using multiple transmit antennas has attracted a lot of interest due to the fact that the sum capacity of the system scales linearly with the minimum of the number of transmit antennas and the aggregate number of receive antennas. Thus, given enough receivers, capacity can be increased simply by adding more transmit antennas. A drawback of most existing techniques, however, is that they are either far from optimal or have high implementation complexity. In this talk, I will review a recently introduced approach called integer-forcing (IF) precoding, also known as downlink IF, which has the potential to outperform any linear precoding scheme, despite enjoying similar low complexity. I will then discuss our results for the special case of two receivers: an optimal choice of parameters for high SNR, leading to a finite (and small) asymptotic gap to the sum capacity, as well as an extension to general SNR that achieves performance very close to the sum capacity.
