Admission information
Objectives
With this module, students gain an understandig of the different processes of telecommunication networks (life cycle) as well as how their economic cost can be evaluated. Important economic concepts will be obtained as well as their application on networks. Particular emphasis will be given on the process modeling and its implementation and simulation using the TIBCO/Arena tool as well as on the techno-economic analysis using the TEN tool.
Description
Value analysis studies are an integral part of every strategic marketing and business plan related with new products and services in the ICT industry. They are commonly used to compare important parameters such as capital and operational expenditures (CapEx, OpEx), life‐cycle costs, revenue streams, discounted cash flows, and techno‐economic evaluation measures such as the net present value (NPV) and the internal rate of return (IRR). Such studies offer a measurable output and can be used to support the decision making process related with the business or the market that a company should be in, the potential of certain technology solutions, or, the future of internal R&D projects, etc. A good modelling of the network operational process is necessary to identify the key cost factors and find ways to reduce cost and increase benefits. A process modeling tool will be presented in detailed and will be used by the students to perform studies. Furthermore, the educational web application "TechnoEconomics of Networks (TEN)" will be used for some exercises on techno-economic assessment

Teaching and learning methods
During the lectures students are instructed in a teacher-centered style. The exercises are held in a student-centered way. In the exercise part, the students have access to the computer-based tools and will be guided through several problem studies. The project will require the students to model, implement, solve and present the results independently or in small groups.
Examination
The type of examination is adapted to different learning outcomes:
The capability of process modeling will be evaluated through a project study to be done individually or by small groups (2-3 persons) during the semester. The project will be presented to the class.
A final exam will be done at the end of the semester to grade the knowledge adquired during the course.
The final grade will consist of:
- 60% final exam
- 40% project
