Functional Compression For Goal-oriented Communication: A Post-Shannon Communication Method

Abstract:
In the classical information theory, Shannon solely focused on the statistics of the messages ignoring the semantics. From Shannon’s point of view, the fundamental communication problem is replicating messages from one point to another. In contrast, post-Shannon communication extends Shannon’s communication framework to consider the semantics of the messages and the intended goals of communication. Post-Shannon theory includes approaches to address different types, such as message identification, common randomness, and functional compression for goal-oriented use cases. This talk will include the fundamentals and motivation behind functional compression. I will also discuss real-life applications of functional compression to address the practicality questions.
Biography:
Sifat Rezwan received his B.Sc. degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from North South University, Bangladesh, in 2018. Then, he obtained his M.Eng. degree in Computer Engineering from Chosun University, South Korea, in 2022. During 2019–2020, he was with Grameenphone Ltd. (Telenor group), where he was involved in transmission network operations and automation and received the top performer award in 2020. He is currently pursuing his PhD at Technische Universität Dresden. He is currently working with Post-Shannon communication to increase the network capacity with functional compression for goal-oriented communication.
