Biography
Hongjie You (he/him) works as an external research PhD candidate at the Chair of Media Technology (LMT) of Technical University of Munich, in conjunction with Huawei Munich Research Centre, Germany.
Education:
- Doctoral candidate in the field of learning-based HDR image and video compression since December 2021.
- Master of Science in Communications Engineering (MSCE) with high distinction, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Technical University of Munich, 2018 - 2021.
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with high distinction, College of Elite Education, Nanjing University of Science and Technology, 2014 - 2018.
Research
His research interests include high dynamic range (HDR) imaging & video processing, HDR tone mapping for image and video, dynamic range compression based on machine learning (ML) approaches and ML applications in image and video compression. He is also interested in virtual reality (VR), which involves omnidirectional imaging and immersive experience evaluation via subjective quality assessments. (see publications)
Hongjie You is an active participant in standardisation and committee member of several international standardisation organisations such as DIN, ISO, ITU-T and ITU-R, for standardisation topics relating to image coding, video coding and HDR Photography and HDR video. He is involved in developments of image coding standards in JPEG (ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29/WG 1), video coding standards in MPEG/JVET (ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29/AG 5 - MPEG Visual Quality Assessment, WG 3 MPEG Systems and WG 5 MPEG joint video experts team with ITU-T SG 21) and digital photography standards (ISO/TC 42/WG 18 and WG 23). Selection of standardisation projects with recent adopted proposals:
- (JPEG AI) ISO/IEC 6048-1 | ITU-T T.840.1 Information technology — JPEG AI learning-based image coding system Part 1: Core coding system (JPEG AI official website)
- (HDR Gain Map) ISO 21496-1 Digital Photography — Gain map metadata for image conversion Part 1: Dynamic Range Conversion (widely adopted by Adobe, Apple, Google Android, Huawei HarmonyOS)
- ISO 22028-5 Photography and graphic technology — Extended colour encodings for digital image storage, manipulation and interchange Part 5: High dynamic range and wide colour gamut encoding for still images (HDR/WCG)
- Amendments to (HEIF) ISO/IEC 23008-12 Information technology — High efficiency coding and media delivery in heterogeneous environments Part 12: Image File Format
- Amendments to (ISOBMFF) ISO/IEC 14496-12 Information technology — Coding of audio-visual objects Part 12: ISO base media file format
- (New work item proposed to ISO/TC 42 Photography) HDR for still images — Best practices [ISO/PWI 25092]

Student supervision
TUM students from the School of CIT can reach out via E-Mail for potential topic supervision in different categories of student works, including Bachelor thesis (BA), Master thesis (MA), Forschungspraxis/Research Internship (FP) and Seminar at the Chair of Media Technology (LMT). The topics will be conducted internally at the TUM with LMT. External supervision at a firm is only possible for student's work that's conducted with Huawei Munich Research Centre.
For full time student work placement (Werkstudent/Praktikum in German), students from the School of CIT can do an external mandatory or voluntary (usually 6 months) research internship at Huawei Munich Research Centre, subject to availability and hiring policies. Please enquire if a CIT student is interested in such a work placement.
Please include in your contact emails the required documents for student supervision:
- A tabular CV
- Transcript of record (Leistungsnachweis) from the TUMonline
- Your LRZ-identifier and matriculation number at TUM, indicating your study programme (BSEI, MSEI/MSCE, Informatics etc.)
- A short description of your interest and skills
