Research credits for Google Cloud Platform were provided to the project on wind flow simulations in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) using Cloud Computing.

Anshul Jindal from Professor Gerndt's research group in Cloud Computing and IoT received research credits worth 5000 USD to conduct the experiments in Google Cloud Platform for the project on wind flow simulations in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).

The effects caused by wind flow on tall buildings is a governing factor for the structural design. Usually, such effects are modeled with costly wind tunnel simulations, where the building is scaled down to model scale and subjected to artificially reproduced wind flow. Numerical investigations using CFD have been used to assess the wind action on buildings.

These simulations typically require large computational resources, which immensely limits the efforts in this field. Therefore, as part of this project, the computational power of Google cloud is used for the numerical simulations. Further, the research team plans the analysis in the field of cloud performance, monitoring, and use-case-specific optimal utilization of compute resources and storage.

The expertise in CFD is provided by master student Benedikt Strahm who does his master thesis at the Chair of Structural Analysis of TUM Department of Civil, Geo and Environmental Engineering.
